B.I.O.N.I.C. School Tragedy Teams
Almost every week we hear of school tragedies in the news, and it rips our hearts out to hear of those suicides, school shootings, or other tragedies. When young people hear of those tragedies, they want to reach out to those schools/communities to let them know they care. B.I.O.N.I.C. Teams send posters (about 30-feet long) with signatures of our students and staff to show our support. Through the years it has been powerful to see that schools we have reached out to, often in turn reach out to other schools that experience tragedy because they want to help other schools like we supported them. In this video Noha and Ashleigh explain our process for sending the posters.
We learned the importance of these types of outreaches from what happened to us. During the 2001-02 school year Green Mountain High School faced the deaths of four students. Neighboring schools reached out in very tangible ways through gifts, food, posters, etc. That inspired us to reach out to other schools too. B.I.O.N.I.C. Teams have also reached out to schools/communities that experienced different kinds of tragedies – a tsunami in Japan, the 9-11 tragedy in New York, a shooting at a supermarket, a shooting at a movie theater, etc. The results of the poster outreaches are powerful! With one poster we heard that it even prevented a suicide!
